| Last weeked was ARE -- the Fall Esperanto Gathering, which I've posted about before -- so I was in New York state, by Lake George, speaking Esperanto for the weekend. I offered to give a presentation on knitting, it's modern culture, and Esperanto. And I did. And it went well. I had hoped to interact with the audience more, but I was too nervous to think clearly enough to ask the audience questions along the way and I just had enough time to cover what I wanted to present with no time left over for discussion. | I finished reading Marvirinstrato, which is a collection of original short stories in Esperanto by my friend Tim (some have won prizes in the big annual Esperanto literature contest). He self-published the book, using one of these online print-on-demand houses (in fact, probably Amazon.com, I think?) but the quality of the physical book (paperback) is excellent! If I saw it in the store, I would not have guessed that it was print-on-demand and not printed in a mass-quantity press run. Technology not only for digital distribution of books but also for physical distribution of books is making significant strides. Speaking of which, the book is available for free download in PDF format (or HTML even). The book is licensed under a Creative Commons license, which permits sharing and copying (as long as it's non-commercial, attributed, and not changed). Still, the assumption is that Esperanto speakers will want to support Esperanto literature by purchasing the book. Even those who read the PDF have purchased physical copies -- I guess people still like to collect things ... and get them signed by the author. | Mi finis legi la libron Marvirinstrato, kiu estas aro de originalaj noveloj en Esperanto verkitaj de mia amiko Tim (iuj gajnis premiojn de la Beletra Konkurso de UEA). I suspect that because myself and others have already started making quips in conversation or on Facebook mentioning elements from various stories. Most of the stories in the book are like fables; they take place in worlds almost similar to our own but with fantastic elements. Mixed in is a playful advertisement for a fake product, Pharoah's Flour, which is referenced in a few other stories. All the stories are playful and witty, but have a seriousness or moral to them. And the fantasy elements are fascinating, making the stories gripping, as I want to follow how these fantasy worlds play out. And each story creates a new world to explore. So you can hopefully see how this provides an abundance of referents. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that there was any story whose ending was pefectly satisfying -- where everything came together and fit perfectly or there was an ironic twist -- but the stories were, as I said, gripping, so there was still enough to make the book enjoyable. And, as I've also said, there's enough substance to make the book one that you can keep referring back to and still find new meaning in. | Do, nu, jen mia recenzo: Mi tre ĝuis legi la libron kaj mi imagas ke ĝi fariĝos ofta citaĵo aŭ aludaĵo en la Esperanta komunumo, kaj kiel grava literatura verko kaj kiel populara kulturaĵo. Though there was no shortage of new words that I had to look up. I kept a list of words that were unfamiliar or that I knew but felt were unusual enough to write down. | So, I'm going to Wrockstock 3 in November. It's a three-day weekend of wizard rock at a retreat on a lake in the Ozarks, near Mark Twain National Forest. So besides non-stop Harry Potter-themed music, the setting looks wonderful. | Do, mi ĉeestos la eventon Wrockstock 3 en novembro. | I'm a bit behind on posting about my trip to DC to join a friend for the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Which was also a good excuse to visit two other friends in the DC area. | Mi multe prokrastis skribi pri mia vojagxo al Vaŝingtono por kun amiko kune ĉeesti la noktomezan debuton de la filmo Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Kiu estis ankaŭ bona preteksto por viziti du aliajn amikojn kiuj loĝas en la vaŝingtona regiono. | | The follow picture (click for the article that it's from) was taken outside the Uptown Theater. Apparently that's the place to go for midnight premieres -- people famously lined up in Star Wars costumes for the Star Wars movies -- but barely anyone was in Harry Potter costumes for this movie. I happen to be in front of the TV while there is coverage of the Supreme Court nomination hearings. I just saw Senator Grassley make comments about what a "good judge" does and how the "empathy" statements bothered him, because he feels that is contrary to what a good judge does ... and since I can't be there to knock some sense into him, I feel compelled to rant here.
The Republicans are painting themselves as the party of "rule of law" and I think it's unfortunate that the Democrats are falling into the trap by letting themselves be portrayed as *not* supporting the rule of law. There is nothing contradictory between "empathy" and the qualities that Grassley thinks makes a "good judge": applying the law as written and not as the judge wishes it were written.
I see "experience" and "empathy" being important from two directions:
(1) Even if you apply the law exactly as written, without applying any prejudice to the *law*, you need to understand the *parties* in the case in order to apply the law (as written!) to their situation! If the law says "the person should not be subjected to undue hardship" ... what stops a rich priviledged judge from saying "There was no hardship; they should have gotten their butler to drive them!" If the judge doesn't understand the person's situation, they cannot apply the rule of law accurately to that person.
(2) It is ludicrous to assume that the law is so clear that a judge is not required to interpret (or, even, as Senator Kyl just said, with distaste, "to go with his gut"). The recent case in Britain of whether Pringles qualifies as a "potato chip" (for purposes of taxes and trade) shows this. If the most mundane words like "potato chip" are not without ambiguity, how can we expect any less mundane laws to not require interpretation by judges?
I think the Democrats should be arguing that comments on "empathy" and "experience" are in no way contradictary with the Republican's desire for "rule of law" or for judges to "follow" the law and not "make" it. I think it's dangerous to argue the other way.
(Also, given her judicial record, it's surprising that Republicans would vote against her. I can't imagine a Democrat appointing a judge any more perfect for the right than Sotomayor, just looking at her record. Her experience as Assistant DA prosecuting criminals and her experience in private practice as a commercial litigator fighting for corportations are exactly the sides you associate with Republicans -- would they rather that Obama nominated someone who was entirely a fighter for unions and social justice causes?)
(Wow, Senator Graham was more cogent than I expected. I guess I'm pretty ignorant about him and just assumed that he'd embarrass my state, but I actually have a little more respect for him.)

| As I said a couple months ago, I went to visit crankyotter in LA for roadtripping to Grand Canyon and environs. I posted pictures on Facebook -- partly because I do it easily from my phone while we were still on the trip -- but I figured that I should share some here. | Some new friends of mine are college students in Florida and they're doing the backpack-around-Europe thing this summer. They speak Esperanto, so they're stopping at Esperanto events and meeting local Esperantists. They were in London and now they're in Paris, and they posted some pictures on Facebook. They posted a couple of Sacré-Coeur that really made me nostalgic for Montmartre — my favorite part of Paris. | Here's another post of photos from last year. As you've seen, I've been working my way through a big stack of photos; most of them are now posted, but there are few odds and ends left. It's one of a few preserved estates in Waltham -- others being the Lyman estate (The Vale) and the Paine estate (Stonehurst). Anyway, a sheepshearing festival would let me work off some pseudo-homesickness for New Zealand. We have an icecube tray at work and it's very common to open the freezer and find that there's a spike sticking out from a cube, even as long as 1 to 2 inches! They were hearing a request for building permits from a firm that's been trying to build a big "multi-use" complex in the center of town. The proprieters of my local coffeeshop and my local bookstore were both publicizing the meetings -- otherwise I would not have heard about it! -- and I'm concerned about development in my town, so I went. The complex would be mostly luxury condos, with a bunch of store fronts at ground level. Despite the fact that the store fronts are all empty at the luxury apartment building down the block (which also is not fully rented). There were also lots of valid concerns about how the look of the back of the building (which faces people's homes) was not given enough attention (to make it look pleasing for those residents) and also that it would be towering compared to the homes on that street (partly because the street is on a hill). Anyway, the council chamber was sufficiently stately that I took a picture. | Pasintjare, mi ĉeestis la publikan parton de kunsido de la Urba Konsilio de Waltham. | I follow the posts at Planet Haskell which is an aggregate of blogs by Haskell users/developers and from Haskell-related news sites. Recently, this post appeared there, about recent developments in the story of Gödel having found a loophole in the US Constitution which could legally allow a dictatorship to arise. (!!) | Mi abonas al la fluo de enskriboj ĉe Planedo Haskell kiu unuigas blog-fluojn de Haskell-uzantoj/evoluigantoj kaj de Haskell-rilataj novaĵ-ejoj. Lastatempe, tie aperis ĉi tiu enskribo, kiu menciis lastatempajn novaĵojn pri la rakonto ke Gödel trovis breĉon/malakordon/elturniĝon [kiel oni diras loophole?] en la Usona Konstitucio per kiu oni povus leĝe krei diktatoron. (!!) | | The post is short, so you could just read it (and the two previous posts that it references), but let me summarize: Kurt Gödel was preparing for the US citizenship exam by studying the Constitution. You'd think that there would be some very basic tenets (like republicanism) which the Constitution would hold out of reach of amendment. | Right before the inauguration, I heard something on the radio which I had to go look up, to get the details right: In 1872, Frederick Douglass -- who you'll hopefully remember was African American, and born a slave -- became the very first African-American nominated as a Vice Presidential candidate in the United States, running on the Equal Rights Party ticket with Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for President of the United States. | When I was in highschool 16 years ago, I remember hearing that Jules Verne had started a novel about a group of researchers who were commissioned to go into the heart of Africa and who used Esperanto to communicate with the locals. The unfinished manuscript had turned up in 1981 and it was assumed that it had not been completed because of his death. However, according to articles in Libera Folio (teaser article and followup), a recent study by a Catalunian Esperanto-speaker concludes that Verne intentionally stopped the novel, due to the growing coverage in the media (and at local academic meetings) of violence and cruelty against the people of the Congo by the French colonizers. This contradicted the positive view of colonization in his novel. Verne wanted his stories to be possible extensions of our actual world, often even referencing historical events, and not be too fantastical or unbelievable. So obviously Verne needed to rethink his novel in light of the news. It is believed that Verne did not intend to put the work off forever, as his close friend and publisher wrote later to Verne's son that Verne had intended to solve the "difficulties" and "uncertainties" in the work. | Mi memoras ke, kiam mi estis en mezlernejo antaŭ 16 jaroj, mi aŭdis ke Jules Verne komencis verki romanon pri vojaĝo de stud-komisiono al la kerno de Afriko kie la grupo uzis Esperanton por komuniki kun la lokuloj. | On returning home from the long trip to India, New Zealand, and LA, I had a couple days rest before road-tripping out to Lake George, NY, for a weekend Esperanto retreat, Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo de Esperanto (ARE). This was the 15th annual Fall Esperanto Weekend, an event which brings together Esperanto-speakers from New England, Quebec and Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, and beyond, for a relaxing weekend in the woods. | Revenante hejmen post la longa vojaĝo al Barato, Nov-Zelando, kaj Los-Anĝeleso, mi havis kelkajn tagojn por ripozi antaŭ ol veturadi aŭte al Lago George, en Novjorkio, por la Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo de Esperanto (ARE). | Here is a sampling of pictures that I took on my recent trip to NZ. I posted these on Facebook but hadn't gotten around to posting them here. I also posted something like 35 pictures of my parents' cat, nearly all them of the cat sleeping, in various positions. | I just stumbled on another holiday event this week: The 5th or 6th Annual Boston Christmas Cavalcade For the Homeless. It appears to be an evening of entertainment at Johnny D's (in Davis Square) to benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition. From the lineup, Jennifer Kimball and Rose Polenzani are two local folk/rock musicians that I have heard of. But I was surprised to see Ryan Landry's name mentioned. I assume they mean the playwright and creative genius behind The Gold Dust Orphans, the drag theater troupe that I went to on Friday (and have been to before and before and before and before). Their current play All About Christmas Eve is quite excellent — it plays through Jan 3rd, so you can still catch it. | Mi ĵus malkovris alian vitrofestan eventon kiu okazas ĉi-semajne: La 5a aŭ 6a Ĉiujara Bostona Kristnaska Kavalkado Por Senhejmuloj.
